Disinfection of over 1,200 vehicles conducted at the border in Odesa region

From April 25 to May 1, 2025, a thorough disinfection of 1,287 vehicles was carried out at the border crossing points in the Odesa region. These measures are part of enhanced biosecurity aimed at preventing the introduction of dangerous animal diseases from European countries into Ukraine.

Prevention of the spread of infectious agents

According to the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection, vehicle disinfection plays a crucial role in protecting against the foot-and-mouth disease virus, bluetongue, and other transmissible infections that may enter Ukraine along with vehicular traffic.

“This procedure is one of the key components of biosecurity, as transportation is one of the most common mechanical carriers of infectious agents,” the agency clarified.

Experts emphasize that the foot-and-mouth disease virus can persist in the environment for a long time, so even indirect contact with contaminated surfaces poses a risk of infection for animals and farms.

Comprehensive control measures at the border

The disinfection of vehicles at the crossing points is accompanied by the introduction of mandatory disinfection mats, thorough inspections of vehicles, and the removal of animal products from the hand luggage of citizens. According to agency representatives, “washing and treating vehicles with disinfectants at the border is not a formality, but a vital measure. It helps protect Ukrainian farms from outbreaks of epizootics and prevents economic losses.”

The State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection emphasized that this comprehensive approach is aimed at maintaining epizootic welfare in Ukraine and strengthening national food security.
