UN Distributes Free Vegetable and Potato Seeds to Residents of Frontline Regions
Ukrainian families living in frontline regions will have the opportunity to receive free potato seeds and 12 other essential vegetable crops from the United Nations. This initiative aims to support residents of Dnipropetrovsk and Mykolaiv regions, who are most affected by the war and limited access to agricultural resources.

What Vegetables Are Available
As part of the FAO UN program, Ukrainian households will receive seed kits containing potatoes, cabbage, radishes, eggplants, onions, beets, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, carrots, peppers, parsley, and sweet corn. In total, the assistance will reach 4,500 families, each of whom will receive one kit for growing vegetables independently.
“This is an important step at the start of the new agricultural season, when access to quality seeds directly impacts food security and the ability of households to grow their own food,” emphasized the FAO.
Thanks to this assistance, Ukrainian families will be able to start their gardening activities more quickly, even in the context of unstable logistics and limited financial resources.
Where the Distribution Takes Place and Additional UN Support
The seed kits will be distributed in Dnipropetrovsk and Mykolaiv regions. The UN has also announced a search for suppliers of seed kits, with applications accepted until January 16 on the UNGM portal. The organization emphasizes that supporting access to seeds helps preserve local food production and strengthen community resilience in challenging conditions.
“By supporting access to seeds, the FAO contributes to preserving local food production and helps Ukrainian communities remain resilient even in crisis conditions,” the organization noted.
In addition to seed assistance, the UN continues to provide financial support for low-income Ukrainians, focusing on socio-economic vulnerability criteria. As of December 2025, the following programs were in effect:
- Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance (MPCA) — provides monthly payments of 3,600 UAH per person for three months (total amount — 10,800 UAH) via bank transfer or Western Union.
- Emergency Cash Assistance — offered to those who have been evacuated or affected by missile strikes, covering urgent expenses such as food, rent, medical services, and relocation.
- Winter Cash Assistance (“cash for winter heating”) — a one-time payment of 19,400 UAH for families living within a 10-kilometer zone from the front line, as well as for those already receiving MPCA.
The mentioned measures aim to strengthen food security, support local production, and enhance the social resilience of Ukrainian communities during this challenging wartime period.
