Price Dynamics for Borscht Vegetables

Unlike potatoes, onions have recently decreased in price: they are now sold for 6 hryvnias per kilogram, whereas just recently they cost 8 hryvnias. The other vegetables in the borscht set have also seen price increases. Carrots and beets have each risen by one hryvnia — their current price is 9 hryvnias per kilogram. White cabbage has increased in price from 9 to 10 hryvnias per kilogram.

The situation with imported vegetables has also changed. The price of pink tomatoes has risen to 165 hryvnias per kilogram (compared to 155 hryvnias last year). Cucumbers have increased to 135 hryvnias per kilogram, up from 130 hryvnias in December.

Prices for Imported Vegetables and Fruits

Ukrainian consumers have experienced some relief due to the decrease in prices for foreign eggplants, which have dropped by 50 hryvnias and are now sold for 200 hryvnias per kilogram. Bulgarian peppers have also become more affordable — their price has decreased by 10 hryvnias, to 180 hryvnias per kilogram.

In the fruit segment, there have been price fluctuations for citrus fruits. Mandarins, after reaching a peak during the New Year holidays, have dropped in price from 90 to 75 hryvnias per kilogram. Oranges have lost 5 hryvnias in price and currently cost 90 hryvnias per kilogram. In contrast, lemons have become more expensive — their price has risen from 100 to 115 hryvnias per kilogram.

“The price of tomatoes rose by about 20% before the New Year due to holiday demand for this popular salad ingredient. However, so far, tomato prices have not begun to move in the opposite direction, despite the anticipated decrease in demand.”

Experts emphasize that last year, prices for borscht vegetables significantly fell due to overproduction, in some cases by up to 50% or more. For instance, wholesale prices for white cabbage decreased by 82%. However, now, due to limited supply, this vegetable has started to rise in price again.
