As of 2025, there are over 3,000 billionaires in the world, with a combined wealth of €13.7 trillion. More than 20% of all billionaires globally reside in Europe, highlighting the region’s significance in the global distribution of capital.

Leaders in the Number of Billionaires Among European Countries

The most billionaires live in Germany — 171 individuals with a total wealth of €676.4 billion. The richest person in the country is Dieter Schwarz, owner of the Schwarz Group, which manages the supermarket chains Lidl and Kaufland. His wealth is estimated at €35 billion, placing him 37th on the global list of the richest people.

Italy ranks second with 74 billionaires who possess a total of €289 billion in assets. The leader among Italian billionaires is Giovanni Ferrero, head of the confectionery company Ferrero SpA, with a fortune of €32.6 billion. He is the 41st richest person in the world.

The United Kingdom has 55 billionaires with a combined capital of €203 billion. The wealthiest Briton is Michael Platt, co-founder and managing director of BlueCrest Capital Management, whose fortune is €16 billion, securing him 106th place in the world.

France occupies fourth place in the European ranking with 52 billionaires. The richest among them is Bernard Arnault, head of the luxury brand holding LVMH (Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Sephora, and others), with a fortune of €152 billion. He is the fifth richest person on the planet.

Sweden has 45 billionaires, with the wealthiest citizen being Stefan Persson, former chairman of H&M, with a capital of €15.9 billion.

Other European Countries in the Ranking

Switzerland is home to 42 billionaires. The wealth is shared between Gianluigi Aponte, founder and chairman of MSC, and his wife Rafaela Aponte-Diamant — each with €32.2 billion. This allows them to rank 44th in the world among the richest people.

Spain, despite being one of the largest economies in Europe, has only 34 billionaires. The wealthiest Spaniard is Amancio Ortega, with a fortune of €106 billion, placing him ninth in the global ranking.
