Renaming the Coin and New Design
The head of the National Bank of Ukraine, Andriy Pyshny, announced that if the relevant draft law is supported by the Verkhovna Rada, the next batch of coins will be minted under the new name — ‘Steps’. According to him,
“We are one step away from the moment when this idea, whose time has come, can finally not be stopped. … We will still need to mint 50 kopecks for a certain period. There are approximately one and a half billion in circulation. And we want the next batch that we will mint to be struck not as kopecks, but as steps.”
At the same time, he noted that the design of the new coins has not yet been developed, but work will begin immediately after the draft law is passed by the Verkhovna Rada. Once the necessary support is received, the imagery and style of the coin will be created with consideration of historical and national traditions.
Motivation and Goals of the Renaming
The National Bank explains the initiative as a restoration of historical justice, as well as a desire to strengthen Ukraine’s national identity. According to Andriy Pyshny, the new name will symbolize progress and will become part of the state policy on de-Sovietization and the promotion of Ukrainian traditions.
It is expected that the renaming and new design of the coin will help emphasize the country’s independence and sovereignty, as well as make the monetary circulation more modern and aligned with the Ukrainian cultural context.
