Support for Ukrainian Business and Economy
As noted by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Yulia Svyrydenko, the continuation of the preferential regime will provide significant support for Ukrainian businesses amid the war. This decision will strengthen the positions of Ukrainian exports, help preserve jobs, and support the country’s economy.
“I want to thank the Government of Canada for supporting Ukraine during the war. The extension of the preferential regime for the import of Ukrainian goods will contribute to strengthening Ukrainian exports, preserving jobs, and overall strengthening the economy amid the war. This will allow even more Ukrainian producers to engage in global trade and global supply chains.”
Canada’s Minister of Finance and National Revenue, François-Philippe Champagne, also confirmed that Canada will continue to support Ukraine by providing military, financial, and humanitarian assistance. He emphasized that this decision will help maintain Ukraine’s economic stability and demonstrates Canada’s intention to support Ukraine for as long as necessary.
Results and Prospects of the Preferential Regime
The preferential regime for Ukrainian goods in Canada was introduced back in June 2022, initially for a period of one year, after which it has been extended annually. According to the Ministry of Economy, during the program’s operation, Ukrainian exports to Canada exceeded $35 million, and due to the elimination of duties, Canadian importers have already saved $8.5 million. An additional extension is expected to save another $1.2 million in customs duties.
By the end of 2024, the total volume of exports from Ukraine to Canada reached $152 million. Furthermore, since the beginning of the full-scale war, Canada has provided Ukraine with over $8 billion in military, financial, and humanitarian assistance.
