Implementation of EU Standards for Geographical Indications in Ukraine: Current Status
Ukraine is actively continuing to harmonize its system of geographical indications for food products, wines, and spirits in accordance with the requirements of the European Union. The issue of adapting national legislation to European standards has become a key topic at the 9th meeting of the Ukraine-EU Subcommittee on Geographical Indications.

Legislative Framework and Next Steps
During the meeting, the parties discussed the current state of legislative development in the field of geographical indications, as well as the mechanisms for their application and protection. Special attention was given to the next stages of cooperation between Ukraine and the EU to ensure the effective functioning of this system at the national level.
As of today, Ukraine has already established a legislative framework for the protection of geographical indications in the areas of food, agricultural products, wines, and spirits. At the same time, work is ongoing to finalize the subordinate legislation necessary for the full implementation and control of this system.
Geographical indications are a development tool that allows for the protection of unique Ukrainian products, the formation of regional brands, and their entry into the European market
Changing Approaches of Producers and New Control Mechanisms
Food producers in Ukraine are gradually changing their approaches to the use of specific geographical indications. This is especially true for cheeses: there is currently a gradual move away from the use of the name “Feta” and the introduction of new commercial designations for this product.
It is worth noting that products with old labeling may still be on sale, provided they were produced before January 1, 2026. In such cases, the packaging must have special labeling indicating the production date, and the circulation is monitored by authorized state bodies.
Furthermore, mechanisms for the registration, use, and control of geographical indications have already been implemented in Ukraine, and the system for certification and support of producers is actively developing. An expert commission has been established under the Ministry of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture, which will approve the specifications of products that certify their uniqueness and connection to specific territories.
