Japan is on the brink of a significant rise in the agricultural sector, which could parallel the country’s economic breakthrough in the 1960s. This was stated by Takeshi Sudo, head of projects at the consulting company Agri Connect, during a presentation at a seminar as part of the Farm Design & Development forum held in October at the J Agri Week exhibition.

Intersectoral Strategies and Cooperation as the Key to Development

Takeshi Sudo presented a concept for successful agricultural business development based on intersectoral strategies and partnerships between local authorities and investors. He is convinced that these approaches could drive the future boom in Japan’s agriculture.

“I am confident that the flourishing of agricultural production in Japan is still ahead,” said Sudo, who previously worked at Fujitsu and managed the creation of the Smart Agriculture Iwata and Grand Bouquet Otaki greenhouse projects.

One example of modern agricultural entrepreneurship is the SAC Iwata project. This greenhouse complex spans 8.5 hectares and is equipped with a research and logistics center, operating with medium to high levels of technology. Another project, Grand Bouquet Otaki (GBO), specializes in orchid cultivation and the implementation of innovations in packaging. Subsequently, both enterprises were integrated into Daiwa Food & Agriculture and Aucnet Group.

New Projects and the Importance of Interregional Cooperation

According to Sudo, most Japanese municipalities are currently focused on supporting existing farmers and traditional crops, not fully utilizing the potential for business expansion. At the same time, trends are changing: over 120 new agricultural projects initiated by local authorities are already being implemented in the country.

Sudo emphasized the importance of applying “design thinking” in planning agricultural projects and highlighted the benefits of close cooperation between different regions. As an example, he mentioned the Dutch cluster Agriport A7, stressing that similar partnership models between business and government could serve as a catalyst for the development of Japan’s agricultural sector.
