EU prepares new tariffs and sanctions on Russian energy resources
According to the head of the European Commission, the EU has already significantly reduced oil and gas supplies from Russia, but some volumes are still entering the European market. She emphasized that the European Commission plans to impose tariffs on oil imported from the Russian Federation. Sanctions are already in place against the ports receiving liquefied gas from Russia.
“What are we doing now? We are imposing sanctions on those ports that receive liquefied gas from Russia, and we want to impose tariffs on the oil supplies that are still coming into the European Union,” noted the President of the European Commission.
Abandoning Russian energy resources: timelines and impact
In the European Union, it is expected that the introduction of new restrictions and increased tariffs on Russian oil and gas will encourage certain countries, including Hungary and Slovakia, to transition to alternative energy sources more quickly. When asked about the timeline for completely stopping oil purchases, Ursula von der Leyen explained that there is a gradual phase-out of purchases, and a new package of sanctions is proposed this year, which must be approved by the EU member states.
Furthermore, in her social media account on platform X, the President of the European Commission emphasized that by 2027, Europe will completely abandon Russian fossil fuels. European Commission spokesperson Olaf Gill clarified at a briefing that the EU may increase tariffs on the import of Russian oil and gas, and the corresponding decision could be made by a qualified majority among the member states of the bloc.
