Predictability of Ukraine’s Trade Flows to the EU: New Prospects

Ukraine is capable of ensuring the stability of trade flows to the European Union, which will be more effective compared to the potential imposition of tariffs by the European Commission on Ukrainian agricultural products after the expiration of autonomous trade measures on June 5.

This was stated by Taras Kachka, Deputy Minister of Economy and Trade Representative of Ukraine, during an online discussion dedicated to the future trade regime between Ukraine and the EU.
“This concerns the attention (of the Ukrainian government, – ed.) to trade flows, the agreements between Ukraine and the EU in 2023-2024, regional control over the flow of grain products from Ukraine to the neighboring five EU member states, and the export licensing system implemented by Ukraine. This is evidence that we are listening to our partners’ concerns. We are convinced that we can ensure the predictability of trade flows from Ukraine to the EU better than any tariffs,” noted Taras Kachka.
He also emphasized the importance of resources that Ukraine imports from the EU for agricultural production, highlighting the cooperation between the countries. The products supplied by Ukraine have a European component and therefore should not be subject to biased treatment.
Taras Kachka pointed out that Ukraine is an important support for EU farmers, as its agricultural products contribute to price stability in the European market and help cover shortages.
“We support producers in the EU, and we are also major clients of EU producers,” he emphasized.
Kachka also indicated the significance of trade liberalization between Ukraine and the EU, particularly in the agricultural sector, which will open new opportunities for adaptation for both Ukrainian and European farmers. In the medium and long term, Ukraine could become a solution to many challenges in EU agriculture.
Moreover, he drew attention to the relevance of discussing tariffs imposed by the U.S. administration on products from the EU, which, according to him, raises concerns in European countries.
“For us – for Ukraine and the European Union – it is important to maintain and improve market access, as this is crucial for both sides,” concluded the Trade Representative of Ukraine.
We remind you that the losses of Ukrainian agricultural producers in the event of the cessation of trade preferences from the EU could exceed 4 billion dollars.
