The European Union is preparing the 17th package of economic sanctions against Russia in response to its aggression against Ukraine. The new restrictions are expected to target key sectors of the Russian economy and will serve as an important tool in pressuring Moscow to achieve peace and stabilization in the region. In Kyiv, there is hope that these measures will strengthen Ukraine’s position in its fight for independence.

Possible Consequences of New Sanctions and US Reaction

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham stated that if Russia refuses to achieve a “decent and fair” peace that aligns with Ukraine’s interests, the American Senate is ready to support a bipartisan bill to strengthen sanctions. The new restrictions include the introduction of secondary tariffs for countries purchasing Russian oil, gas, uranium, or other essential goods from Russia, complicating its economic situation.

Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump condemned Russia’s recent strikes on civilian targets in Ukraine, expressed doubt about Putin’s willingness to end the war, and threatened him with new “banking or secondary” sanctions. However, the US has postponed the imposition of sanctions against Gazprom’s subsidiary in Serbia, the oil company “Naftna industrija Srbije” (NIS), for the second time.

Russian Economy and Drilling Operations

Russia likely does not believe in the intensification of sanctions, as Russian oil companies continue to drill intensively. Over the past two months, the average volume of operational drilling has exceeded 2,370 kilometers, one of the highest figures in the last five years. This indicates Russia’s determination to maintain and strengthen its energy sector even during periods of economic restrictions.
