EU presents plan for complete abandonment of Russian energy sources by 2027

The European Commission has unveiled a comprehensive plan aimed at fully eliminating the European Union’s dependence on Russian energy. According to this document, EU member states must cease entering into new contracts for the supply of Russian gas, including both pipeline and liquefied natural gas. All existing spot agreements will remain in effect only until the end of 2025.

European strategy for phasing out Russian energy sources
Under the EC’s plan, by the end of 2027, the European Union must completely halt imports of gas and oil from the Russian Federation. Additionally, each member country has been tasked with developing its own national measures for gradually phasing out the use of Russian energy sources to strengthen energy security and enhance the stability of the internal market.
Additional restrictions and diversification
In addition to gas and oil, the European Commission is implementing further restrictions. Specifically, new actions are planned to counter Russia’s shadow fleet, as well as a ban on entering into new agreements for the supply of enriched uranium and other nuclear materials from the RF. The phase-out of nuclear fuel from Russia will occur gradually, prioritizing the development of European alternative technologies.
“All measures will be accompanied by ongoing efforts to accelerate our energy transition and diversify energy supply sources to eliminate risks to supply security and market stability,” the EC stated.
It is worth noting that since the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the share of Russian gas in the EU’s energy consumption has already decreased from 45% to 19%, and oil from 27% to 3%.
