Senators Joni Ernst (Republican) and Richard Blumenthal (Democrat) have proposed the establishment of a $150 million fund in 2025, intended to monitor the “shadow fleet.” The primary goal of the fund is to intercept vessels carrying raw materials from Russia and Iran that transport oil to India and China, violating sanctions. The confiscated oil will be sold, and the proceeds will be directed towards reducing the US national debt.
“In addition to dismantling Moscow’s malicious attempts to circumvent American legislation, this law will also provide our country with the opportunity to use confiscated assets to pay down our own debt,” Ernst said.
Blumenthal added, “These measures will give our export control real teeth.”
It is noted that the future of the bill in Congress remains uncertain, although initiatives concerning Russia and Iran typically find support among lawmakers from both parties.
