Prospects for Cooperation between Ukraine and Japan in the Agricultural Sector Discussed at Meeting in Kyiv

Taras Vysotsky, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture of Ukraine, held a meeting with representatives of the Embassy of Japan in Ukraine.

During the negotiations, the parties focused on the current state and future development of bilateral cooperation, particularly in the field of agricultural production.

Key Areas of Cooperation

The meeting participants discussed several priority areas for collaboration:

  • combating the effects of climate change and developing irrigation systems;
  • supporting alternative energy sources;
  • modernizing and deep processing of agricultural products;
  • improving livestock efficiency;
  • implementing modern agrotechnologies and producing agricultural machinery;
  • creating modern vegetable storage facilities;
  • realizing joint food industry projects;
  • enhancing Ukraine’s role in ensuring global food security.

Support from Japan and Future Projects

Taras Vysotsky expressed gratitude to the government and people of Japan for their long-standing support, particularly for cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) regarding the implementation of grant programs for the emergency recovery of the agricultural sector. He also noted the activities of the joint Japanese-Ukrainian working group on agricultural recovery strategy, which is being conducted together with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries of Japan.

“Among the priorities of the Ministry of Economy is the continuation of irrigation reform, support for farmers, especially in frontline areas. The ministry has also focused on the development of agro-processing and biofuel production. Japan’s assistance in implementing projects in these areas is very important for Ukraine. This will contribute to the faster recovery of the Ukrainian agricultural sector, the sustainability of rural areas, and the assurance of international food security,” emphasized Taras Vysotsky.

The official stressed the need to expand cooperation with the Japanese side, particularly with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), as well as to seek new avenues for cooperation.

Additionally, the meeting addressed the upcoming visit of a Japanese business delegation to Ukraine, which is expected to enhance partnership and develop investment projects in the domestic agricultural sector.
