The Federal Council of Switzerland has submitted a draft resolution to Parliament regarding the ratification of the updated Free Trade Agreement between the countries of the European Free Trade Association and Ukraine. This step is an important demonstration of support for Ukraine during a challenging time and simultaneously strengthens the positions of Swiss companies in the Ukrainian market.

Key Changes in the Updated Agreement

The document includes new sections related to e-commerce, sustainable development, support for small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as technical cooperation between the states. According to the updated agreement, the elimination of customs duties is anticipated for nearly all Swiss goods – 99.9% of products will receive duty-free access to the Ukrainian market.

“With this agreement, Switzerland demonstrates solidarity with Ukraine during a critical time while also strengthening its competitiveness in the Ukrainian market.”

Next Steps and Support for Ukraine

The Federal Council emphasized that Switzerland continues to support Ukraine through development programs, humanitarian initiatives, and reconstruction projects. In particular, consultations regarding the country’s recovery agreement are ongoing. It is expected that Parliament will consider the draft at one of the upcoming sessions – either the spring or summer session in 2026, and the agreement itself may come into effect at the beginning of 2027.

In April, Ukraine already signed the updated free trade agreement with the countries of the European Free Trade Association, which includes Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. This is expected to significantly simplify trade procedures between the countries and promote the development of economic cooperation.
