Ukraine is experiencing an increasing concentration of land resources: nearly a third of agricultural land is controlled by just ten of the largest companies. This trend is shifting the balance in the market and affecting both the economic potential and the social structure of rural areas.

Land Concentration: Causes and Consequences

Recent analytical studies indicate that key market players — large agribusiness holdings — are actively expanding their land banks, gradually pushing out small farmers. In fact, today ten companies control almost a third of all land plots, leading to the monopolization of the agricultural sector.

The scale of this phenomenon is indeed significant — millions of hectares are concentrated in the ownership or long-term lease of a few agricultural corporations. On one hand, this provides substantial tax revenues and jobs; on the other hand, it creates dependency for entire regions on the decisions of a few key beneficiaries. As a result, medium and small farms face limitations in their opportunities for development and expansion.

“This situation creates a kind of deadlock: the land supposedly belongs to the people, but it is managed by a select few. The scale is staggering, as we are talking about millions of hectares that shape the country’s export potential. On one hand, there are significant taxes and jobs; on the other, there is complete dependence of entire regions on the moods of a single beneficiary.”

Influencing Factors and Market Prospects

The main reasons for the concentration of land in the hands of agribusiness holdings are access to cheap financial resources, strong legal support, and the ability to think strategically for decades ahead. Large companies buy or lease plots for long terms, effectively blocking the entry of new players and reducing the level of competition in the market. Newcomers find it difficult to join the “closed club” due to the high financial threshold.

The question arises: how safe is this model in terms of food stability and the social climate in agricultural regions? When one holding owns land in several regions, it can significantly influence regional economies and dictate the terms of cooperation. The further development of the situation depends on the effectiveness of antimonopoly mechanisms, which so far remain largely a formality.

  • Agribusiness Holding — a large company that unites several enterprises in the agricultural sector and controls all stages of production.
  • Land Bank — the total area of land that a company owns or leases long-term.
  • Latifundist — a large landowner who possesses significant agricultural areas.
