The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has supported the initiative of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine to build modern small vegetable storage facilities. This was announced by the Minister of Agrarian Policy, Vitaliy Koval.

“Today in Ukraine, up to 35% of the harvested produce is lost due to inadequate storage conditions. We are addressing this issue. Together with FAO, we are launching the construction of modern vegetable storage facilities with capacities ranging from 20 to 1,000 tons, primarily in the frontline areas of Kharkiv and Mykolaiv regions,” he detailed.

The Minister emphasized that each of the small storage facilities will provide jobs for about 150 small farmers. This creates new jobs and fosters the formation of cooperatives. An important aspect is also the reduction of crop losses, which is critical for the country’s food security.

Koval noted that after the implementation of the small storage projects, plans are in place to move on to the construction of large multi-section facilities. These facilities will be available not only to farmers but also to business representatives, supermarkets, and social institutions such as hospitals, schools, and other establishments.

Additionally, the ministry’s team discussed a new cooperation project with FAO representatives aimed at supporting farmers in the production of biogas and electricity from agricultural biomass.
