Deepening Diplomatic Relations Between Ukraine and Syria

During a meeting with media representatives, Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine plans to strengthen its diplomatic presence in Syria by opening an embassy. The countries also intend to cooperate in the areas of food security and infrastructure projects, which include the signing of significant contracts in the agricultural sector. According to the head of state, these agreements open up new opportunities for other countries in the region as well.

“We will strengthen our diplomatic presence in Syria – our embassy will be operational. We are ready to cooperate in the area of food security, as well as regarding infrastructure. We have agreed with the President of Syria on significant contracts in the agricultural sector. And we see opportunities here for other countries in the region,” the head of state stated during the meeting with media representatives.

Opening of Embassies and Future Plans

It is worth noting that on April 5, Volodymyr Zelensky announced the conduct of negotiations with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, during which issues related to the war between Russia and Ukraine, security, and food supply were discussed.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgiy Tikhiy noted at a briefing that Kyiv has approved a plan to open an embassy in Damascus – the formation of the diplomatic staff and the search for suitable premises have already begun. In turn, Syria has also announced its intention to open an embassy in the Ukrainian capital in the near future.

Georgiy Tikhiy also emphasized that back in January 2026, Ukraine received official consent from the Syrian side to initiate the activities of the Ukrainian embassy in the Syrian Arab Republic in accordance with Article 2 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. At this time, the corresponding order has already been issued by the Foreign Ministry, and an action plan for organizing the work of the diplomatic institution has been approved.
