Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, during a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, reported that Kyiv has urged the EU to halve the price cap on Russian oil to $30 per barrel. This step, according to the Ukrainian side, could significantly weaken the economy of the Russian Federation and be decisive in achieving peace.

Ukraine’s call for tougher sanctions against Russia

Andrii Sybiha noted that Ukraine not only put forward a specific proposal regarding the oil price cap but also shared its vision for enhanced sanctions measures in the banking sector, particularly concerning the Central Bank of Russia. He emphasized that now is a critical moment for joint diplomatic mobilization to achieve the strategic goal of a just and comprehensive peace for Ukraine.

“We raised the issue of the price cap on Russian oil. I voiced the figure we consider justified – thirty dollars. We presented our vision regarding other sanction measures. We are now at a stage where, through joint efforts, we can deliver a devastating blow to the Russian economy, thereby forcing them to peace. Another such painful area for the Russian economy is undoubtedly the banking sector, including the central bank. Therefore, we discussed all these matters,” the minister told reporters during his visit to the EU Foreign Affairs Council.

Ukraine’s efforts to strengthen international support

The Foreign Minister emphasized that Ukraine is committed to a peaceful resolution and has never created obstacles to achieving peace. He highlighted the importance of informing European partners about the developments on the front and the dynamics of peace initiatives following the visit of the President of Ukraine to Turkey, which significantly strengthened international support for Kyiv.

Sybiha also reminded about the recent negotiations between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump, as well as leaders of European countries, noting that extremely intensive diplomatic work is currently ongoing. The minister stressed that Ukraine consistently defends its fundamental goals and will continue to make maximum efforts to achieve an unconditional ceasefire, which it considers the first step towards a just peace.

During his visit to Brussels, Sybiha participated in the EU Foreign Affairs Council, where he provided detailed information to his colleagues about the current situation on the battlefield and the further steps Ukraine is taking to strengthen international support, particularly regarding contacts with the EU, the USA, and Turkey.
