Ukraine’s EU Membership: Prospects and Realities by 2027
The possibility of Ukraine joining the European Union is viewed as one of the potential elements of security guarantees for the country in the future. At the same time, according to EU officials, there are currently no specific agreements or set timelines regarding Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

Discussion on Ukraine’s EU Membership
During a recent phone call among representatives of the so-called Coalition of Willing, the issue of Ukraine’s EU membership was raised as an important security guarantee. However, according to one European official, this topic was not central to the discussion, and the year 2027 was never mentioned as a possible target for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
“During yesterday’s phone call of the Coalition of Willing, some mentioned Ukraine’s EU membership as an important security guarantee for the future, but this issue was not the main focus of the conversation, and no one mentioned 2027 as a date for this,” he said.
Another high-ranking EU official expressed skepticism about the realism of such a timeline for Ukraine’s accession. According to him, it is merely a point in a peace plan that satisfies both the US and Ukraine, and lacks practical grounds for implementation in the coming years.
Accession to the EU as Part of the Peace Plan
According to information coming from various sources, expedited accession of Ukraine to the European Union may be included in a possible peace plan being discussed among Kyiv, Brussels, and Washington. In particular, the draft peace proposal currently being discussed by US and Ukrainian officials with EU support mentions the possibility of membership by January 1, 2027.
However, as of today, Ukraine has not yet completed any of the 36 stages required for EU membership. Accelerated accession would require Brussels to revise its current enlargement policy, including phased access to EU funds, voting rights, and benefits such as a common agricultural policy.
