Ukraine’s National Debt Exceeds the Psychological Threshold of 172 Billion Dollars

As of March 2024, Ukraine’s total national debt amounted to 171.73 billion US dollars, which is an increase of 1.56% (or 2.64 billion dollars) compared to the previous month. This data was released by the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine. According to the ministry, the total state and state-guaranteed debt at the end of March was 7,123.25 billion hryvnias or 171.73 billion dollars, while in February it was 7,019.53 billion hryvnias or 169.09 billion dollars.

The total amount of direct state debt at the reporting date was 6,852.22 billion hryvnias (165.2 billion dollars), which increased from 6,740.16 billion hryvnias (162.36 billion dollars) in the previous month. The external debt in this structure rose from 118.05 billion dollars to 120.94 billion dollars. At the same time, the internal debt in hryvnia equivalent decreased from 1,839.62 billion hryvnias to 1,835.65 billion hryvnias (in dollars — from 44.31 billion to 44.26 billion).

The state-guaranteed debt as of the end of March was 271.03 billion hryvnias or 6.753 billion dollars. According to the Ministry of Finance, the total state (direct and guaranteed) debt of Ukraine increased by 14.27% or 20.74 billion dollars in 2024, reaching 166.06 billion dollars.

Trends in the Dynamics of Ukraine’s National Debt

In recent years, Ukraine’s total national debt has been gradually increasing. In 2023, it rose by 30.4% or 33.87 billion dollars, reaching a record 145.32 billion dollars. In 2022, the debt increased by 13.66% or 13.39 billion dollars to 111.34 billion dollars. In 2021, it grew by 8.52% or 7.69 billion dollars to 97.95 billion, while in 2020, it increased by 6.9% from 84.4 billion to 90.3 billion dollars.
