At the beginning of 2025, Ukraine is experiencing significant changes in its export portfolio, driven by positive trade dynamics. While traditional export sectors are facing difficulties, corn has emerged as a leader among Ukrainian products, highlighting both opportunities and challenges in the agricultural sector.

This is reported by AgroReview

According to data, corn accounts for 26.5% of agricultural exports and 16% of total exports, resulting in supply volumes of 4.7 million tons and a value of $982 million. These figures demonstrate the potential of Ukrainian agriculture, despite challenges in other sectors.

“Corn exports have not only strengthened confidence in the agricultural sector but have also played a crucial role in balancing the country’s export priorities.”

Key markets such as Spain, Italy, Turkey, Egypt, and the Netherlands have shown strong demand for Ukrainian corn. Spain leads in import volumes, confirming the growing international interest in this product.

Overall Export and Import of Ukraine

However, despite the successes in corn exports, Ukraine’s overall export figures for January 2025 indicate an 11.5% decrease compared to the same period in 2024. At the same time, imports increased by 8.2%, leading to a significant rise in the trade balance deficit.

The decline in exports of traditional goods, such as ferrous metals and grains, suggests that the Ukrainian economy is facing serious challenges. Meanwhile, the increase in imports indicates a reliance on external sources to meet domestic demand.

Trade Strategy and Future

Experts note that while the successful export of corn may serve as a model example, other sectors also require support to improve their performance. Policymakers should focus on developing strategies that not only support the agricultural sector but also revitalize traditional export industries.

Data from January 2025 underscore the need to diversify export markets and modernize production. While the agricultural sector shows positive results, other industries must find ways to adapt to the conditions of the contemporary global market.
