Ukrainian Biomethane Could Become a New Direction for Energy Partnership with Germany
Ukraine is considering the possibility of supplying biomethane to Germany, which could open a promising avenue in bilateral energy partnership. This topic was central during the roundtable discussion “Export of Biomethane to Germany: Target Market Segments and Open Questions,” which included the participation of Taras Vysotsky, Deputy Minister of Environmental Economy and Agriculture of Ukraine, representatives from the governments of both countries, as well as energy market experts and representatives from international organizations.

Potential of the Agricultural Sector and Economic Benefits
A key advantage for Ukraine in exporting biomethane is its strong agricultural sector, which provides a raw material base through agricultural waste and by-products. The production of biomethane not only contributes to the development of alternative energy but also creates added value for the agricultural sector, attracts investments, and opens new opportunities for rural communities.
For European Union countries, particularly Germany, Ukrainian biomethane could serve as a tool for energy transition, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and diversifying energy sources. For Ukraine, this is an opportunity to open a new export market, promote economic growth, facilitate a “green” transformation, and integrate into the European energy space.
“In 2025, Ukrainian companies exported over 11.2 million cubic meters of gaseous biomethane produced domestically. At the same time, Ukraine has significant potential for biomethane production due to its agricultural sector. For us, this is not only an energy issue but also a matter of economic development and creating added value in the agricultural sector. Cooperation with Germany in this direction is an example of mutually beneficial partnership, where both sides win: Ukraine gains a market for new energy products, while Europe secures an additional source of renewable gas for its energy transition,” emphasized Vysotsky.
Challenges and Prospects for the Energy Market
The realization of the biomethane cooperation potential requires a comprehensive approach, close interaction between governments, businesses, and European institutions. Regular expert discussions help address problematic issues and establish transparent market rules.
- Harmonization of regulatory requirements and biomethane certification according to EU standards.
- Recognition of guarantees of origin and integration into European registries.
- Inclusion of the Ukrainian gas network into the European mass balance system.
- Investments in production capacities and infrastructure.
- Providing long-term market signals that will enable the realization of dozens of investment projects.
The development of cooperation in the biomethane sector has not only economic but also strategic significance. It will facilitate Ukraine’s energy integration with the EU, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and shape a modern model of partnership in renewable energy.
Ukraine reaffirms its readiness to expand this direction and deepen dialogue with Germany and other European countries. Biomethane has the potential to become one of the key factors in the joint energy transformation of Europe, as well as a new driver of growth for the domestic economy.
