Ukrzaliznytsia Raises Tariffs for Grain Car and Tank Car Rentals for Farmers

Starting in spring 2026, the branch “Center for Transport Logistics” of the joint-stock company “Ukrzaliznytsia” will introduce new tariffs for the use of freight rolling stock. The updated rental rates take into account the growing demand for rail transportation and seasonal changes in the export cargo market.

What Changes Have Occurred in the Tariffs for Grain Cars and Specialized Tank Cars

Farmers’ logistics costs will increase, as the daily rental fee for one grain car will now be 2100 hryvnias excluding VAT. This is 100 hryvnias more compared to the rate that was in effect in February. Specialized tank cars for transporting food raw materials, particularly oil, have seen an even more significant price increase. Their daily rate has risen from 1250 to 1400 hryvnias.

Amid the rising costs of specialized cars, there has also been a decrease in the rental price of universal hopper cars. Their rental is now 100 hryvnias cheaper, amounting to 1450 hryvnias per day. Such tariff changes require farmers to take a more careful approach to planning rail logistics and selecting the optimal rolling stock for transporting the harvest to port terminals or the state border.

The Impact of Tariff Increases on the Domestic Grain Market

The logistics component can account for up to 30% of the final cost of grain for export. Since most of Ukraine’s grain is transported by rail, any increase in the cost of renting cars directly affects the purchase prices within the country. Traders typically factor these costs into their margins, which leads to a decrease in the price that farmers receive directly at the elevator.

Thus, the rise in the cost of renting cars will significantly impact the pricing of agricultural products, as the transportation component remains one of the main factors in determining the final cost of grain for export.
