Organic Blueberry Cultivation in Germany Has Doubled

In Germany, the area of land dedicated to fruit cultivation is approximately 72,000 hectares, which is less than half a percent of the country’s total agricultural area. The majority, about two-thirds, is occupied by apples and strawberries.

According to data from the Federal Center for Agricultural Information (BZL), organic farming is particularly popular among apple orchards—nearly a quarter of all areas are managed according to organic standards. However, for strawberries, this figure remains quite low at only 2.7%.
Impressive Growth in Organic Blueberry Areas
There has been significant growth in organic blueberry cultivation. In the last two years, the areas allocated for this type of crop have more than doubled.
“The powerful growth in organic blueberry areas is impressive. Here, the planted areas have increased more than twofold over the past two years,” the publication notes.
Overall Volume of Organic Cultivation
Currently, about 18% of the area of orchards and berry fields in Germany is cultivated organically, indicating a growing interest in ecological farming methods. It is also noted that Germany is the largest importer of Ukrainian organic products.
