Researchers from the southern regions of Vietnam have identified local strains of fungi and actinobacteria that exhibit activity in combating Fusarium wilt of bananas, which causes significant damage to global production of this crop. The research group, which included Tran V.T., Dinh T.K., and Le D.D., studied the pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense tropical race 4 (TR4), known as the primary causative agent of the disease.

Selection of Local Microorganisms for Biocontrol

During the study, scientists isolated and tested local strains of fungi and actinobacteria collected from soils in southern Vietnam. Their goal was to determine the ability of these microorganisms to inhibit the development of TR4 under laboratory conditions. It turned out that several isolated cultures exhibited pronounced antifungal activity against the Fusarium wilt pathogen.

“The study shows that biological control using local microorganisms can offer an alternative approach to management in banana production systems.”

Prospects for Implementing Biological Control

Fusarium wilt caused by TR4 is known for its resistance to chemical agents and its ability to persist in the soil for long periods. The results obtained indicate that the use of locally adapted microbial agents could become part of integrated strategies for protecting banana plantations.

Researchers emphasize the importance of the local soil microbiota in the natural suppression of phytopathogens. This approach allows for harmonizing disease management with the existing ecological conditions of the region. Currently, the team plans to conduct additional experiments in field conditions to assess the effectiveness of the selected microorganisms in commercial banana farms, as well as to develop optimal methods for their application in conjunction with modern production technologies.

The results of this research contribute to the development of environmentally safe plant protection measures and the reduction of the negative impact of TR4 on banana plantations in Vietnam and other producing countries.
