In 2026, further price increases for key food products, including buckwheat, are expected in Ukraine. Although the rate of price growth has slowed somewhat after a sharp rise in 2025, stability in the market has still not been achieved.

Factors Influencing Buckwheat Prices

The cost of products in Ukraine is shaped by both internal and external factors. Among the main reasons are rising production costs, high energy resource prices, logistical difficulties, and fluctuations in global grain and food markets.

Economist Volodymyr Chyzh notes that buckwheat traditionally remains one of the most affordable products for Ukrainian consumers. At the end of 2025, its average retail price was 37-38 hryvnias per kilogram, which is approximately 30% higher than the price level in December 2024.

“In 2026, the price increase for buckwheat could be around 8-10% compared to last year. Accordingly, its retail price will be approximately 40-42 hryvnias per kilogram,” suggests Volodymyr Chyzh.

Prospects and Forecasts for 2026

The main reason for the increase in buckwheat prices, experts say, is the moderate rise in the cost of grain crops. At the same time, the surplus of certain types of cereals in the global market partially restrains price increases. Weather conditions, seasonality, and harvest levels also influence price formation.

Volodymyr Chyzh emphasizes that it is currently difficult to provide an accurate forecast regarding prices until the end of 2026. In his opinion, it is necessary to consider the state of the country’s energy sector, possible increases in electricity prices for businesses, as well as the volumes of grain and feed crop harvests:

“We need to understand the condition of our energy sector in the coming months, whether there will be an increase in electricity prices for businesses, and what the grain harvests, including feed crops, will be,” the expert explained.

The economist stresses that throughout the year, forecasts may change and require adjustments depending on the economic situation.
