A Ceasefire Has Begun Near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant for Repairing Power Lines and Preventing a Nuclear Accident

A ceasefire has been initiated near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), organized with the mediation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The aim is to ensure the safe conduct of repair works and strengthen the electrical connection of the plant to the power grid, which is intended to prevent the risk of a nuclear catastrophe.

Repair Works and Restoration of the Line

According to IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, demining and preparatory measures have begun in the area of the damaged section of the 330-kilovolt “Ferosplavna-1” power line. This line was damaged six months ago and has remained disconnected from the ZNPP since then.

“Today, demining operations and other preparatory measures have begun near the damaged section of the 330-kilovolt (kV) Ferosplavna-1 line, which was severed from the nuclear plant six months ago,” the statement said.

Technical specialists will begin repairs on Saturday. Over the next few days, it is planned to restore the connection of “Ferosplavna-1” to the nuclear plant. This will allow the operation of two power lines, including the one that was repaired in October.

Status of Reactors and Power Supply of the Plant

All six reactors at the ZNPP have been in a shutdown state for over three years and are not generating electricity. Despite this, the plant requires a constant power supply to operate the pumps responsible for cooling the reactor fuel and spent nuclear material. This is vital to prevent the melting of nuclear materials and potential radiation contamination.

In the event of a complete loss of external power supply, the ZNPP is forced to rely on emergency diesel generators that ensure the operation of the plant’s safety systems.
