In the 2025/26 season, China expects a significant increase in sugar production to 11.5 million tons. This will set a new record compared to the 11.2 million tons projected for the previous 2024/25 marketing year. The main factor behind this growth is the increase in the area allocated for sugar beets and sugar cane.

Sugar Production from Cane and Beets

The total volume of sugar from sugar cane is projected to be 9.9 million tons. This result is expected due to the expansion of planting areas, as growing sugar cane remains more profitable compared to other crops. Meanwhile, sugar beet production is estimated at 1.6 million tons. This is related to the fact that a significant number of farmers in the Inner Mongolia province have shifted to growing sugar beets due to more favorable market prices and a decrease in demand for alternative crops.

Consumption and Sugar Import in China

Sugar consumption in China is expected to remain stable at 15.8 million tons. This is 100,000 tons more than the official forecast from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In the 2025/26 season, sugar imports to China are expected to reach 5.3 million tons, which is more than the 5 million tons in the 2024/25 marketing year. The increase in imports is linked to low sugar prices in the global market. It is anticipated that the Chinese government’s measures to regulate the import of sugar syrup will help maintain a high level of raw sugar imports.

“Sugar cane production is projected at 9.9 million tons due to the expansion of planting areas, as sugar cane remains more profitable compared to other competing crops.”
