Major Technical Failure in Ukraine: Damage to Services and Fare Payment

On April 26, Ukraine experienced a significant technical crisis that led to disruptions in several important digital services and payment systems. The “Diia” app, which is essential for accessing government services, is currently unavailable to users, displaying the message “Unfortunately, an error has occurred.”

Main Consequences and Causes of the Failure
According to information available as of 9:30 AM, the disruptions also affected payment systems in transportation across the country. Contactless payment via Apple Pay and Google Pay is temporarily unavailable, and in several cities, including Kramatorsk, there are reports of the inability to pay for rides using terminals.
Experts attribute these malfunctions to technical updates and failures in data processing centers. The “Diia” team reported that a temporary failure in mobile app operations occurred due to updates in one of the major data centers, but the team is currently working to restore services. Representatives from “Oschadbank” also reported a temporary unavailability of contactless payment for subway rides due to a technical failure, and bank specialists are working to resolve the issue.
Rapid Response Mechanisms and Recommendations
Support services assure that the situation is under control. The “Diia” team noted that due to technical difficulties, they expect to restore service operations by 10:00 AM. They also confirmed that the malfunctions are not related to hacker attacks.
Given the risk of temporary unavailability of electronic services, Ukrainians have been advised to carry cash, especially in transportation and other public facilities. This applies to users in cities where fare payment via terminals is currently unavailable.
“To avoid inconveniences, we recommend keeping cash on hand and staying updated on service operations. We are working on a quick restoration of all systems,” said the company “Nova Poshta.”
Overall, this failure has served as a signal for Ukrainian services about the need for greater redundancy and backup data processing channels to prevent mass failures in the future.
