The project to create a bridge over the Danube, connecting the Ukrainian village of Orlivka with the Romanian city of Isaccea, has the potential to become an important component of a new transport corridor between Ukraine and the European Union. This position was expressed by the Deputy Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine, Minister of Community and Territorial Development Oleksii Kuleba.
Key Infrastructure Projects on the Ukrainian-Romanian Border
During the official visit of the Ukrainian government delegation to Romania, which also included President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, the issue of bridge construction became one of the main topics on the agenda. In the course of negotiations with Romanian President Nicolae Ciucă, the parties discussed in detail the prospects for the development of border infrastructure.
“According to him, this promising infrastructure project was discussed during the working visit of the Ukrainian government delegation to Romania together with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. During the meeting with Romanian President Nicolae Ciucă, the parties considered key infrastructure projects on the Ukrainian-Romanian border”.
Among the main priorities for cooperation is the opening of a new border crossing point “Bila Tserkva – Sighetu Marmației”. According to the plan, this crossing point will begin servicing passenger vehicles in the summer of 2026. It is expected that after the completion of the first phase, the daily capacity will reach 700 vehicles.
Development and Modernization of Border Infrastructure
The participants in the negotiations also discussed the modernization of the “Porubne – Siret” crossing point. Thanks to the reconstruction, this point will be able to accommodate an additional 300 freight vehicles daily, significantly easing logistics at the border.
Oleksii Kuleba emphasized that Ukraine and Romania are actively working on expanding the network of crossing points, implementing joint border control, and developing new transport routes, including railway lines. These measures are intended to reduce border crossing times, increase transportation volumes, and enhance economic cooperation between the countries.
