Details of the New Railway Project
The future European gauge railway will span approximately 80 kilometers. The plan is to complete construction by the end of 2027. To implement this large-scale infrastructure project, Ukraine has received its first grant from the European Commission amounting to 73.5 million euros.
According to Oleksii Kuleba, two months ago the first European gauge railway in modern Ukrainian history was opened between Chop and Uzhhorod. During this short period, 9,500 passengers have already used the new route.
“The European gauge railway will be built from the border with Poland to Sknyliv near Lviv. The length of the railway is about 80 km, and construction is planned to be completed by the end of 2027.”
Difference Between Ukrainian and European Railway Gauges
As is known, in most European Union countries, the standard railway gauge width is 1435 mm, while in Ukraine a wider gauge of 1520 mm is used. The introduction of the European gauge railway will facilitate the integration of Ukraine’s railway infrastructure with European transport networks and provide more convenient connections for passengers and freight in the future.
