The European Union’s decision to permit the import and use of three genetically modified corn varieties for animal feed and human consumption opens new opportunities for suppliers from the USA and Brazil. This, in turn, may exert additional pressure on Ukrainian farmers and exporters, intensifying competition in the global market.

Impact of New Market Opportunities on the Ukrainian Agricultural Sector

In the domestic market of Ukraine, the price of corn remains higher than that of food wheat, which is an atypical phenomenon and indicates a tense situation. Prices are supported by strong demand from exporters and processing enterprises, as well as limited supply from farmers who are holding back sales in anticipation of further price increases. Limited corn stocks in the country reinforce price support and maintain tension in the market.

A significant price gap between the 2024 harvest and the upcoming 2025 harvest already reaches $34 per ton, indicating a market supply imbalance. According to the latest data, the purchase prices are as follows:

  • DP Ukraine (Odesa) — around $238-240 per ton,
  • DP Germany (northwest country) — around €220-225 per ton,
  • DP Netherlands (south) — around €220-223 per ton.

For the 2025 market, current prices are:

  • DP Ukraine (Odesa) — around $204-206 per ton,
  • DP Germany (northwest country) — around €203-205 per ton,
  • DP Netherlands (south) — around €198-200 per ton.

European Commission’s Decision on GMO Corn

The European Commission has approved the import and use of three genetically modified corn varieties for animal feed and human consumption. This decision will allow EU member states to utilize these varieties in the production of food and feed products, potentially increasing competition in the global market and opportunities for imports from the USA and Brazil.
