The rise in prices for traditional Ukrainian fruits, particularly apples, is forcing consumers to reconsider their habits: apples in stores now cost nearly as much or even more than bananas or oranges.

The situation in the market has changed dramatically — local apples, which were always considered the most affordable, are now competing in price with imported exotic fruits. This phenomenon was previously uncommon for Ukrainian consumers.

Reasons for the Shortage: Artificial Restrictions and Adverse Weather

Market experts emphasize that the current apple shortage is partially artificially created. Growers, remembering the record prices of June 2025, are hesitant to bring their products to market, hoping for even more favorable conditions. As a result, consumers are facing prices ranging from 35 to 45 hryvnias per kilogram, and the availability of apples is in question.

Additionally, adverse weather conditions have impacted the situation. Last year’s spring frosts caused crop damage, and the harsh winter with temperatures dropping to -20°C and record snowfall complicated the already difficult situation for growers. All of this has led to a decrease in supply and, consequently, an increase in prices.

Interestingly, a significant portion of Ukrainian apples is currently being exported to foreign markets, where they enjoy stable demand and bring currency earnings to producers. Because of this, the domestic market often has a smaller selection of quality products.

Impact of the Energy Crisis and Labor Shortage

Another key factor contributing to the rise in prices is the energy crisis caused by the war and strikes on energy infrastructure. It is impossible to store fruits without stable electricity supply, and the use of diesel generators significantly increases production costs. In many farms, generators operate longer than the main electricity supply, making even a regular apple almost a premium product.

To these problems is added a labor shortage — there is simply no one to pick and sort the harvest, which is already negatively affecting prices and the prospects for the next season. Producers are in a difficult position, balancing between high logistics and energy costs and maintaining their business.

In Ukrainian supermarkets, such as Silpo or ATB, apple prices consistently range from 35 to 45 hryvnias per kilogram. Even with promotions at Varus, apples are no longer perceived as an affordable social product. Likely, the times when apples were the cheapest fruit on the table have temporarily come to an end.

“Market experts note an interesting trend: the apple shortage is partially artificially created. Farmers remember the sky-high prices of June 2025 well, so they are currently in no rush to open their warehouses. They are waiting for an even more advantageous moment while consumers watch price tags around 35–45 hryvnias per kilogram.”

Note: The varieties of apples “Aydared,” “Golden,” and “Gala” traditionally make up the bulk of Ukraine’s exports to the Middle East and Asia. Under the conditions of the energy crisis, the costs of storing one ton of apples have nearly tripled compared to the pre-war period.
