Bangladesh Plans to Import Wheat from India Due to Global Grain Shortage

Bangladesh is considering increasing its wheat imports from India to meet domestic needs amid disruptions in global grain supplies. These measures are becoming relevant due to the growing pressure on the world grain market caused by geopolitical tensions and instability.

India Lifts Restrictions on Wheat Exports

According to agricultural market participants, traders from Bangladesh and India are already actively negotiating future supply contracts. In light of high demand, India has decided to lift restrictions on the export of certain volumes of wheat, allowing the shipment of 2.5 million tons of grain abroad. Additionally, another 500,000 tons of wheat products and 500,000 tons of wheat flour have also been granted export approval.

Such actions by the Indian authorities aim to stabilize the domestic market and support the incomes of local farmers amid fluctuating prices and increased global demand for grain.

Market Changes and Harvest Prospects

Traditionally, Indian wheat has lower competitiveness due to established minimum procurement prices. However, considering the current rise in logistics costs and issues with fertilizer supplies, the demand for Indian products has noticeably increased. These factors make Indian wheat more attractive to importers, particularly to Bangladeshi companies.

“An additional factor is the relatively stable harvest forecast in India: despite local crop damage due to adverse weather, losses are estimated at no more than 2%. At the same time, the overall production of food grains in the country may rise to record levels, creating conditions for increased exports.”

Overall, favorable harvest forecasts in India and the expected increase in production volumes contribute to expanding export opportunities. Against this backdrop, Bangladesh plans to take advantage of the opportunity to increase wheat purchases to stabilize its food market in 2026.
