Barley Prices at Ukrainian Ports Reach 11,000 UAH per Ton Due to Shortage and Rising Costs

There is currently a significant supply shortage in the Ukrainian barley market. The main reasons for this are the high workload of farmers due to seasonal fieldwork, rising logistics costs, and the limited availability of transport for delivering grain to the ports.

Price Increases and Declining Exports

Over the past week, export demand prices for feed barley in Ukraine have increased by 200-300 UAH per ton, reaching levels of 10,800–10,900 UAH/ton (222–225 USD per ton) for delivery to Black Sea ports. In some transactions, the price reached 11,000 UAH/ton for prompt delivery. In the first half of November, barley export volumes from Ukraine amounted to only 58,000 tons, significantly lower compared to the same period last year (110,000 tons). Overall, since the beginning of the season, 1.15 million tons have been exported, which is 57% less than last year’s volumes (1.8 million tons).

Market Trends and Outlook

The significant increase in demand prices is driven by strong results from recent international tenders, where prices reached 257–269 USD per ton on C&F terms. At the same time, the Jordanian government agency recently canceled a tender for the purchase of feed barley due to excessively high offer prices.

“It is worth noting that the demand for malting barley in Ukraine is virtually non-existent, and malt producers promise to return to the market no earlier than spring 2026.”

Moreover, analysts expect that low corn prices and the arrival of new batches of barley and wheat from Australia to the global market in January 2025 may significantly reduce demand for Ukrainian barley, which currently remains expensive. In this regard, experts advise Ukrainian farmers to take advantage of the current wave of increased demand and sell their barley stocks soon.
