Chernivtsi to Get Euro-Gauge Connection with Romania
In western Ukraine, two regional centers, Chernivtsi and Uzhhorod, will receive a euro-gauge connection with European Union countries. Deputy Minister of Finance Oleksandr Kava announced that under an optimistic scenario, construction of the euro-gauge line from the Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi to the Romanian city of Suceava could begin as early as next year.

Currently, the preparation of the technical and economic justification for the project is underway. Chernivtsi could become the second regional center in Ukraine to have direct access to the euro-gauge line within the city, following Uzhhorod.
Construction of the Chop-Uzhhorod Euro-Gauge Line
According to Kava, construction of the Chop-Uzhhorod euro-gauge line is currently in full swing. This project is funded 50% by Connecting Europe Facilities (CEF) and 50% from the state budget. The launch of this euro-gauge line is scheduled for the summer of 2025.
“This euro-gauge line from Chop to Uzhhorod will not only allow for direct passenger trains from Uzhhorod to Budapest, Bratislava, Prague, Vienna, and Dresden, but it will also enable shippers operating in Uzhhorod to send cargo via the euro-gauge line to partners in Europe and receive goods, containers, and materials from European countries directly in Uzhhorod,” noted the deputy minister.
