The farm “Makosad” from the Chernivtsi region has taken an important step in developing its own cherry production — a new sorting workshop has been built in the orchard, and the company is already considering various proposals for the installation of modern sorting lines.

Potential for Increasing Production Volumes

As noted by co-owner Vladislav Makarenko in his article for a specialized magazine, currently, the 5 hectares of orchards do not yield enough harvest to justify significant investments in sorting equipment. According to him, the standard yield of quality cherries is about 10–12 tons per hectare, and the total harvest from the available area reaches 60–70 tons.

“So far, the 5-hectare plot does not produce sufficient volumes of product to justify substantial investments in such equipment,” he clarifies. “The normal yield of quality cherries is 10-12 tons, and overall, we can gather 60-70 tons from our area.”

Plans for Export and Premium Market

The farmer emphasizes that by 2027–2028, a partial increase in productivity from the new cherry plantations is expected. If these plantings achieve at least 50% of their potential yield, the harvest volumes could rise to 150–170 tons. In this case, it would be reasonable to purchase a hydro-cooler and a modern sorting line, which would allow focusing not only on export but also on the premium segment of the domestic market.

At “Makosad,” they continue to develop the cherry cultivation direction. Vladislav Makarenko notes that this crop has become a kind of challenge for the enterprise. He compares it to the thrill of fishing, where one wants to try something new instead of constantly growing the same apples. At the same time, he emphasizes that cherries are a complex crop for mass production, and not every farmer can organize the full cycle of its cultivation and preparation for export, which includes sorting and preparing the final product for sale.
