Significant Increase in Weather Operations in 2025
According to the China Meteorological Administration, necessary precipitation occurred last week in the grain-producing regions of the country, triggered by special operations. Specifically, both ground and aerial measures were taken in the provinces of Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Inner Mongolia to induce rainfall. Aircraft and drones were used to spray chemical agents over clouds to enhance rainfall, snowfall, and reduce the likelihood of hail.
“This year, China has increased the number of ground operations for precipitation management by 20% compared to the same period in 2024. In the provinces of Qinghai, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, and others, 32 rain-inducing operations were conducted using aviation, with a total duration of 102 hours.
Improvement of Rainfall over Million-Hectare Areas
In the provinces of Gansu, Shaanxi, Shanxi, and others, 1,488 ground operations for rain induction were carried out over the week. Preliminary estimates suggest that these measures covered an area of approximately 732,000 square kilometers and increased rainfall by about 560 million tons.
In 2025, a total of 553 aerial operations were conducted nationwide to stimulate precipitation, along with around 17,000 ground operations. Chinese experts note that weather modification technology is now a key element in the formation of a weather superpower.
