Prospects for Cooperation Between the U.S. and China
During a meeting with agricultural sector leaders at the White House, President Donald Trump stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping is ready not only to fulfill but also to exceed the commitments regarding the import of American soybeans. According to Trump, during a recent phone call, the Chinese leader confirmed intentions to strengthen trade ties with the U.S. and even expand purchase volumes.
“As you know, China is purchasing incredible volumes of soybeans,” the head of the Washington administration emphasized. “I recently spoke with [President] Xi [Jinping], just recently. And I think he will do even more than he promised,” Trump added, without specifying when the conversation took place. “I think the relationship is very good. I think he will do more than he promised, and he promised to do a lot.”
In particular, the U.S. president clarified that China has committed to purchasing soybeans worth over $40 billion and expressed confidence that this figure could be exceeded. Trump noted that during negotiations with Xi Jinping, he personally asked him about the possibility of increasing purchase volumes and received a positive response.
Growth of American Soy Imports by China
Earlier, Donald Trump reported that on November 24, he had a conversation with the Chinese leader, during which the supply of soybeans from the U.S. to China was discussed. According to information released on November 26, Chinese companies have already purchased at least 10 batches of soybeans from the U.S. totaling about $300 million. Meanwhile, China continues to increase imports of American products, despite the fact that the price of U.S. soybeans exceeds that of Brazilian soybeans.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously noted that Beijing agreed to purchase 12 million tons of American soybeans by January 2026. He also clarified that over the next three years, China intends to import 87.5 million tons of this crop from the U.S.
