Country Potato Variety from Dutch Breeding Gains Popularity in the International Market
Interest is growing in the German table potato market for the new Dutch variety Country, which combines high yield with stress resistance, particularly to drought and diseases. Producers note that this variety meets the current needs of farmers seeking stable yields in the face of climate change and increased quality demands from retail chains.

Stress Resistance and Stable Yields
The first trials of the Country variety began in 2023 at five different locations in Germany. The main objective was to find a variety capable of withstanding prolonged heat, resistant to skin defects, and ensuring uniformity of tubers at harvest. The results of the trials were so positive that in 2025, the areas planted with this variety were significantly expanded across various regions of the country.
Excellent Qualities for the Market and Consumers
Experts highlight several advantages of Country, including rapid plant development, early maturation compared to other varieties, and uniform tuber size, which facilitates sorting and packaging for retail chains. European buyers, who pay special attention to the appearance of products, have highly appreciated the smooth yellow skin without blemishes, which has become an additional argument for retail chains in favor of this variety.

Currently, the distribution company collaborates with about 700 farmers who grow Country on an area of 5,500 hectares and plans to further increase the share of this variety in its portfolio.
In addition to its resistance to virus Y and scab, Country belongs to the floury cooking types, which enhances its popularity among consumers. Experts note the promising potential of this variety for the entire supply chain – from producers who achieve stable yields to end consumers who value the taste and appealing appearance of the products.
