Crisis in Ukrainian Viticulture: Industry Problems and Scientific Predictions for 2026

Crisis in Ukrainian Viticulture: Industry Problems and Scientific Predictions for 2026

Domestic industrial viticulture is on the brink of a deep crisis and degradation. Experts emphasize that the combination of technical wear of plantations, a complicated phytosanitary situation, and climate change significantly complicates the prospects for the industry’s development in the coming years. Due to prolonged stagnation in the renewal of vineyards, most existing areas have lost the ability to fully realize their biological potential.

Aging Plantations and Decreased Yields

The key issue remains the age of most vineyards. The majority of industrial areas were planted between 2004 and 2010, and as noted by Doctor of Agricultural Sciences Ivan Shevchenko, this period is already critical for the vines in the absence of modern plantation renewal.

The main factors contributing to the degradation of vineyards include:

  • Sparse Plantations. Due to diseases and mechanical damage, individual bushes are lost, leading to a significant decrease in yield per hectare.
  • Damage to Perennial Wood. Frosts and mistakes during pruning destroy the structure of the vine, disrupt sap flow, and weaken the plants.
  • Phytosanitary Risks. The spread of bacterial cancer and viral infections undermines the immunity of the grapevines.
  • Lack of Area Renewal. Insufficient investment in establishing new plantations has halted the rejuvenation process in the industry.

Dangerous Imbalance in the Age Structure of Plantations

The disruption of the balance between young and fruit-bearing vineyards has reached a critical level. According to agronomic standards, the share of young plantations should be about 5% of the total area each year, but the actual figure does not exceed 2.7%. The remaining 97.3% consists of old fruit-bearing vines, a significant portion of which are already depleted and on the brink of productivity.

“Such an imbalance is the result of the absence of a systematic policy for replacing old plots with modern varieties that are resistant to contemporary risks.”

Comparative data on the state of viticulture in Ukraine in 2026 indicate a significant deviation from the standards:

Parameter Standard Indicator Actual State (2026)
Share of Young Plantations ~ 5% 2.7%
Age of Most Vines 8–15 years 16–22 years (cycle 2004–2010)
Climate Pressure Moderate High (water deficit, stress)
Phytosanitary Risk Managed Critical (chronic wood diseases)

Climate Change and Water Resource Shortages

In addition to internal problems, the viticulture industry is heavily influenced by external factors. Global warming, changes in the hydrological regime, and chronic water shortages in southern regions of Ukraine create challenging conditions for grape vegetation. Combined with the aging of plantations, this significantly accelerates the process of vine death and decreased yields.

Despite the difficult situation, a number of farms are focusing on the production of craft wine and preserving the authenticity of Ukrainian products. However, the lack of systematic renewal of the raw material base threatens the competitiveness of the industry in the international market in the coming years.
