Development of Grain Crop Diseases: Situation in the Regions of Ukraine

In several western, some southern, and central regions of Ukraine, a moderate spread of diseases among winter and spring grain crops is observed. Among the main diseases currently affecting crop conditions are powdery mildew, septoria, and root rot. It has been recorded that the damage from these diseases affects between 2 to 10% of plants, with certain areas in Mykolaiv region reporting up to 30%.

Common Diseases and Crop Damage
In addition to those already mentioned, some areas are experiencing the development of brown leaf rust, helminthosporiosis, and net, striped, and dark brown spot diseases. These diseases have affected between 1 to 15% of plants. In the western regions of the country, winter crops have also recorded pyrenophorosis and rhynchosporiosis, affecting 2-8% of the crops. For spring barley, infections include septoria, powdery mildew, helminthosporiosis, as well as spotting and root rots, with damage levels ranging from 2-6%.
Crop Conditions and Protective Measures
In oats in Zhytomyr and Transcarpathian regions, red-brown spotting is observed. It is noted that overall, winter grain crops are at the flag leaf stage – heading, while spring cereals have already reached the tube emergence stage (flag leaf). Against the main diseases, with the intensity of spotting reaching 1%, and leaf septoria and pyrenophorosis at 3-5%, it is recommended to use fungicides with the appropriate spectrum of action to maintain high crop productivity.
“Everywhere, well-developed high-yielding crops of winter (flag leaf stage – heading) and spring cereals (tube emergence (flag leaf)) against the aforementioned diseases (1% intensity of plant damage from spotting, 3-5% from leaf septoria and pyrenophorosis) should be treated with fungicides of the appropriate spectrum of action.”
