Effectiveness of Foliar Fertilization of Corn with Micronutrients at the 3-8 Leaf Stage

Corn is a crop that actively consumes nutrients at all stages of its development. The period from 3 to 8 leaves is particularly important, as plants respond especially well to the application of micronutrients. Foliar fertilization with boron, zinc, copper, and manganese can significantly improve kernel formation and the quality of the harvested product, as confirmed by experts from the journal The Ukrainian Farmer.

The significance of zinc for corn is extremely high. It not only enhances the plants’ resistance to temperature stresses, such as frost and sudden temperature fluctuations, but also participates in photosynthesis and ear formation. The physiological role of zinc in plants is multifaceted. A deficiency of zinc in plants leads to characteristic symptoms: white necrotic stripes and spots appear between the leaf veins, and the leaves take on a white or pale yellow coloration.

The Importance of Zinc for Yield and Application Recommendations

Corn contains approximately 40 mg/kg of zinc. With a yield of 10 tons of grain per hectare, about 400–450 g of zinc is removed from the soil, which constitutes a significant loss, especially if the by-product—stalks—remains in the soil. Such a quantity is not compensated for naturally by soil fertility.

To ensure optimal growth and yield of corn, it is important to plan the application of zinc fertilizers correctly. The level of zinc in the soil and the method of application should be considered. In drought conditions, the use of zinc micronutrients is effective, as zinc promotes the accumulation of organic acids that enhance the plants’ resistance to high temperatures and drought.

With the previously mentioned optimal timing for nitrogen fertilizer application, the use of zinc micronutrients complements a comprehensive approach to increasing corn yield.
