Egypt Forecasts Nearly Record Wheat Harvest and Decrease in Imports

Egypt is preparing to harvest nearly a record amount of wheat, which will allow the country to reduce its grain import volumes. According to forecasts, in the 2026/27 marketing year, wheat imports will reach 12.5 million tons, which is 200,000 tons less than in the previous season. Increasing domestic production is a crucial component of ensuring the country’s food security, so the government is actively supporting the development of the national agricultural sector.

Expansion of Cultivated Areas and Encouragement for Farmers

A key factor in the increase in harvests has been the significant expansion of wheat cultivation areas, which have now reached a historical maximum of 1.5 million hectares. Increased procurement prices set by the government have provided an additional incentive for local agricultural producers. As a result, wheat cultivation has become more profitable, contributing to the growth of grain production in the country.

Import Trends and Development of the Private Sector

Despite the increase in domestic production, the main exporters of wheat to Egypt remain Ukraine and the Russian Federation. They offer competitive prices, lower transportation costs, and faster logistics compared to other suppliers.

“The Egyptian authorities are actively encouraging the increase of domestic grain production, viewing it as an important element in ensuring food security.”

At the same time, the role of the private sector in grain import and processing is growing. According to estimates from the Foreign Agricultural Service, in the 2026/27 marketing year, Egypt may export about 1.2 million tons of wheat flour (in grain equivalent), which is 20% more than the previous year. This allows the country to strengthen its position as a significant supplier of flour to the markets of Africa and the Middle East.
