Export Rates of Grain from Ukrainian Ports Decline at the End of the Marketing Year

The export of grain through Ukrainian ports is showing a slowdown amid the conclusion of the marketing year and the traditional seasonal lull. According to analysts’ estimates, this has impacted the freight market, which remains stable but is characterized by an increase in the availability of free tonnage.

Situation in the Freight Market
The number of available vessels is increasing due to a limited number of new contracts. This results in a significant portion of the fleet being idle while waiting for cargo. Despite low demand, freight rates on major routes—for handy size and coaster vessels—remain largely unchanged. Market participants maintain moderate optimism regarding the prospects for a revival of activity at the beginning of the new grain season, which could lead to a gradual increase in rates and overall business activity.
Current Freight Rates on Major Routes
Currently, market rates for grain transportation from river ports are distributed as follows:
- Izmail – Romania (1–3 thousand tons): 8–9 euros per ton;
- Izmail – eastern coast of Italy (5–7 thousand tons): 29–30 dollars per ton.
For sea ports, the following rates are applicable:
- Chornomorsk – eastern coast of Italy (30–35 thousand tons): 16–17 dollars per ton;
- Chornomorsk – eastern coast of Spain (25–30 thousand tons): 17–19 dollars per ton.
“The freight market for maritime transport remains calm: the export of grain from Ukrainian ports is slowing down amid seasonal lulls and the conclusion of the marketing year.”
It is expected that with the beginning of the new marketing year, activity in the grain maritime transport market will gradually increase, which could positively affect both freight costs and export volumes.
