Frosts in April: Expectations and Consequences for Gardens and Winter Crops

Temperature fluctuations observed in Ukraine are a common phenomenon for April. This was reported in a television broadcast by the spokesperson for the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, Natalia Ptukha.

“In general, such temperature fluctuations are characteristic of April, and these frosts are not something very extraordinary. On the contrary, it is very rare for there to be no frosts in April. Such phenomena occur very often,” the expert noted.
She added that this year’s situation is particularly special because the previous months—March and the winter period—were quite warm. This led to the active vegetation of plants beginning in March.
“And, accordingly, these frosts now may have a more destructive, negative impact on early-flowering fruit trees and on winter crops that have already sprouted,” emphasized Natalia Ptukha.
Currently, a cold Arctic air mass from the northern latitudes continues to influence the territory of Ukraine. An active atmospheric front is moving in from the northwest, bringing precipitation in the form of wet snow. In the coming days, it will advance towards the southeastern regions, where mixed-phase precipitation, primarily wet snow, is expected.
According to forecasts, a cyclone may form over the southeastern and partially central regions tonight, particularly in the Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad, and partially Poltava regions.
Natalia Ptukha also noted that a trend towards rising temperatures is expected in the future. Atmospheric fronts in the coming days will bring mixed-phase precipitation to the western regions. After that, higher temperatures will be observed here on Saturday.
“And by Sunday, most of the territory of Ukraine will feel that spring weather is returning. It is worth noting that precipitation will gradually cease over the weekend as atmospheric pressure rises, and the following week promises to have comfortable temperatures,” concluded the representative of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center.
