In the 2025/26 season, global apple production is expected to decrease by 5% to 81.7 million tons. The reasons for this decline include significant crop losses in China and Turkey, which will not be offset even by an increase in production in the United States.

Apple Production in China and Turkey Plummets

According to a new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) titled “Fresh Apples, Grapes, and Pears: World Markets and Trade,” apple production in China is projected to decrease by 2.3 million tons to 47.0 million tons. The main factors behind this decline are adverse weather conditions in key production regions and a reduction in orchard acreage.

In Turkey, the situation is even more complicated — a nearly 57% collapse in production is expected, down to 2.0 million tons. The primary cause has been severe spring frosts that significantly damaged the orchards.

Trends in the Markets for Apples, Pears, and Grapes

Ukraine maintains stability in apple production despite global changes. Analysts estimate that this year’s production volume in Ukraine will remain at last year’s level, totaling 1.173 million tons. Meanwhile, domestic consumption is projected to be around 1.158 million tons.

“The Ukrainian apple sector demonstrates stability amid global fluctuations. Analysts estimate that production volume in Ukraine will remain at last year’s level, amounting to 1.173 million tons. Domestic consumption in the country is projected to be 1.158 million tons.”

In contrast to apples, the table grape market is experiencing growth: global production of this crop will increase by 545 thousand tons, reaching 30.0 million tons. China, by implementing modern rain-sheltering technologies and growing year-round varieties, will boost its own production to 15.0 million tons. For the first time, the country may share the status of the world’s largest exporter of table grapes with Peru.

Regarding pears, global production in 2025/26 is expected to decrease by 2% to 26.1 million tons. The largest losses have been incurred by China and Turkey due to drought and frosts. Meanwhile, the U.S. plans to increase pear production to 565 thousand tons, which will restore the country’s status as a net exporter.
