In October 2025, global prices for key food commodities significantly decreased. The main reason for this was the increase in global agricultural stocks, which contributed to market stabilization.

FAO Price Indices: Trends by Major Commodity Groups

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in October, the average Food Price Index was 126.4 points, which is 1.6% lower compared to the September figure. Price reductions occurred across almost all major product groups.

  • The price index for cereals decreased by 1.3% compared to September. Specifically, the price of wheat fell by 1%, feed grains by 1.1%, and rice by 2.5%.
  • The meat price index dropped by 2% over the month, primarily due to a significant decline in prices for pork and poultry. At the same time, global beef prices continued to rise due to high demand.
  • The dairy price index fell by 3.4% in October, attributed to a sharp decline in butter prices due to increased export capabilities of EU and New Zealand countries.
  • The sugar price index fell by 5.3%, reaching its lowest level since December 2020. The main factors were high production volumes in Brazil, as well as anticipated increases in production in Thailand and India.

Record Grain Harvest and Its Impact on the Market

The only product group that showed an increase was vegetable oils. The FAO vegetable oil price index rose by 0.9% in October, reaching its highest level since July 2022. This was the result of a combination of factors: increased demand for biofuels and delays in harvesting in the Black Sea region affected prices for palm, rapeseed, soybean, and sunflower oils.

“The FAO also released updated forecasts for global grain markets. Global grain production is expected to increase by 4.4 percent in 2025, reaching 2,990 million tons – a new record level. Global grain usage in the 2025/2026 season is projected to rise by 1.8 percent to 2,929 million tons. Global grain stocks are expected to increase by 5.7 percent to a record 916.3 million tons.”

Additionally, the FAO updated its forecasts for international grain trade in the 2025/2026 season. Global grain trade volumes are expected to grow by 3.2%, reaching 499.5 million tons. A significant increase in wheat exports is projected, while rice trade is expected to decline slightly.
