The global production of tomatoes for processing in 2025 decreased to 40.3 million tons, compared to 45.8 million tons in the previous year. Despite this decline, current global stocks remain high due to record harvests in 2023 and 2024. This allows some producers to maintain competitive prices even in the face of intensified competition.

Changes in Production Across Different Regions of the World

The largest production decrease occurred in China — down 53% to 4.9 million tons. In Europe, the situation varied by country: in Spain, due to abnormal heat, yields dropped by 22%, leading to an increase in prices for Spanish round tomatoes to €2.23 per kilogram. In contrast, Italy increased production by 7%, reaching 5.7 million tons, thereby regaining its position as the second-largest producer of processed tomatoes in the world.

“The high level of current stocks has intensified price competition in the global market, which poses a particular challenge for EU producers facing high production costs,” analysts from the publication noted.

The Position of the United States in the Global Market

In the United States, particularly in California, 10.65 million tons of tomatoes were harvested, accounting for 26.4% of global production. This result strengthens the position of American suppliers, who are currently actively seeking new markets beyond their traditional ones in Canada and Mexico.
